4.5 . 966 reviews

Short summary

In The Cold Start Problem, writer and investor Andrew Chen describes what it takes to turn a startup into a successful brand. The information in this summary is a combination of his own experiences and interviews with CEOs and founding teams of companies like LinkedIn, Zoom, and Airbnb. This summary is a practical handbook that will enable you to understand the concept of “network effects,” a situation that explains how a brand becomes well known. The combination of ideas, interviews, and research by the author will enable readers to understand the secrets of network effects, how to start them, and how to scale them. Business owners and prospective entrepreneurs will learn to overcome early business problems and avoid hitting the ceiling when challenges come. “Without growth, you are nothing, the status quo is dead, scaling up is not possible.” ~ Andrew Chen

The cold start theory comprises five important stages that explain the journey of every new business

Network effects describe what happens when a brand's products get more valuable as more people use them, and one can apply Metcalfe's Law when studying these effects. This law became popular in the dot-com boom and explained the enormous valuations of startups. According to Metcalfe's Law, each time someone joins an app with a network behind it, its value doesn't just increase; it rises to the square of the number of nodes in the system.
Network effects were initially discovered in the 1980s by computer networking pioneer Robert Metcalfe.
The Cold Start Theory is crucial in building network effects. It's composed of five stages, which are important to creating a successful brand. These stages include:
• The Cold Start Problem
• Tipping Point
• Escape Velocity
• Hitting the Ceiling
• The Moat

Let's briefly consider each of these.

• The Cold Start Problem

Most new networks face challenges and fail. For instance, founding users won't stick around if a new app launches but doesn't gain enough views or users on time. For every company just getting off the ground, solving the Cold Start Problem is expedient, and you must be patient enough to scale through this initial phase.

• Tipping Point

The tipping point comes next after your cold start. Here, the product has started getting users; you're beginning to see some network effects happen. However, this stage is critical because everything happens quickly, and if you start losing users, others will leave too. And if the user base is increasing, you're sure to keep having more people join.

• Escape Velocity

Once you've passed the tipping point, the next thing is to work furiously to strengthen your market's network effect and sustain the growth you're seeing.

• Hitting the Ceiling

Rapid growth can hit the ceiling even after reaching the tipping point. So you keep doubling down on efforts and tweaking what isn't working.

• The Moat

This final stage of the framework is all about using network effects to stay far ahead of competitors.

This chapter is just an intro; we'll dive deeper into these concepts in subsequent chapters. We'll also give practical examples you can relate with so that you'll leave this summary with actionable steps to take.

second key point

Products grow when networks expand

Every increase in business size requires new ways of thinking and a stable team that can cause networks to grow. Slack is a classic example. When they launched in 2013, they had 8,000 companies on their waitlist, and that figure rose to 15,000 in two weeks. And by the following year, Slack had 135,000 paying subscribers and was hitting 10K new sign-ups every day.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
